We're back!!! I hope you missed us!
Hannah and I were invited to go to the main island with Joselyn, Miriam, and their kids for the weekend. We took them up on the invitation and it was a great decision!
On Friday after school, we came home and threw some clothes, toiletries, and swimsuits into a small suitcase and then drove like crazy to catch the one o'clock ferry. This is important to note, because lately the ferry system has been TERRIBLE and people are up in arms about it. So Abbie sent me off from the beach early so we wouldn't miss it. We got there, sweating like crazy because we had worked so hard to make it in time, only to find out that only ONE ferry had actually shown up that day. And ours was nowhere in sight. We heard it would be there "later." We were waiting for the cargo ferry, because Joselyn was taking her car over. That was a new adventure for us, too, so we were curious as to how that would all work out.
When we finally got a fairly accurate idea of when the missing ferry would arrive, she parked her Jeep near where the cars drive on to the ferry, which is a feat in itself. You see, this is the one-block downtown and docking area of Culebra, so it's where THE gas station is, several gift shops, some eatery joints, and the government building. The street dead ends at the ocean and is only two lanes wide. There are also only about ten to fifteen parking places. So it's not like there is any orderly way to get your car onto the ferry.
So Joselyn, when the ferry finally arrived, called her hubby to come down the hill from the clinic/hospital to say "good-bye." This, I realized later was a very wise and strategic move on her part because he's the clinic doctor, so is considered to be a very important man on the island. When people (officials) saw him standing by the car, they quickly called for it to be loaded onto the ferry! So there we were, with all kinds of other vehicles, from jalopies to beer trucks, successfully ready to head out.
The trip was about an hour and a half, just as a typical passenger ferry, but when we arrived in Fajardo (our destination), we didn't have to worry about unloading our stuff, we just hopped back into the Jeep and drove off the ferry. It was awesome.
We then headed to their home near San Juan after a lengthy stop for groceries and supplies, and got settled. The kids played for a while, we prepared dinner, and then had a nice quiet evening, just girl-chatting.
On Saturday, we met up with Miriam for a while to go to the pool with her and her two little guys, and had a low-key day. That evening, Joselyn whipped up a wonderful meal (she's a great cook!) and we enjoyed another evening of red wine and girl talk. Both nights we ended up talking until about 1:30 am.
This morning we took our time with breakfast and then went and did a bit of shopping before she took us back to the ferry, where we met up with Miriam. Joselyn needed to stay on the main island for a couple of days, so Miriam and I hung out with the kids on the passenger ferry, and when we arrived back in Culebra, the good doctor brought my car to us and we delivered his daughter to him!
This evening we prepared for our week of school and I must say that I'm a "good tired" from the quality time spent this weekend.
Thank You, God, for this weekend. Thank You for the spiritual conversation, for the laughter, the transparency and honesty I value so much in relationships. This weekend was a special gift and I deeply appreciate it.
I'm so glad you got refreshed with some "friend" time!! God is so good. I miss you, and hope your week goes very smooth and fast!
